The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) defines SEL as, “the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.” (NYSED)
By developing core intra- and inter-personal competencies, including self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, students and adults build capacity to thrive by building a variety of protective factors, including increased resilience, stronger empathy, heightened self-efficacy and agency, and more.
In this session we focus on: Welcoming Routines, Mindful Minute Strategy, Socially Engaging Pedagogy, Optimistic Closure, and strategies for building the five recognized areas that contribute to our students’ well-being.
Your hosts share strategies and tools to address and evaluate the social-emotional (SEL) developmental health of your students. They discuss how to look at this from the lens of a student, parent, and staff member in order to let their voice be heard.
After watching our webinar, check out our Social-Emotional Development Health Climate Survey (SEDH) Overview authored by Penny Ciaburri. This assessment helps us identify entry points for how we can support our students, school staff, and parents. The SEDH Climate Survey is an excellent instrument for establishing a baseline, creating goals, and monitoring progress in supporting students’ needs in this critical area.
